Session 1:5 2:00-3:00 | Meet Charles Brucker
A Choice – Sacrifice Low-Lying Island Nations or Climate EngineeringCharlie Brucker is a full-time Math and Computer Science teacher at Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, CA, one of the top STEM schools in the country. He has built a parallel track on climate science into his curriculum and enjoys speaking on climate engineering at universities around the nation while traveling. |
Prior to teaching, he researched and developed materials and fabrication processes for magnetic tape and disk information storage and retrieval at Xerox Corporation, Eastman Kodak, and Seagate Technology. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University and has authored about 70 technical publications and 12 US patents. He lives in Pleasanton, CA, with his wife, son, and daughter, and two dogs, two cats, two tortoises, bunny, and chicken.
1-5 Session Description: Deliberate climate engineering to counter warming due to inadvertent climate engineering – the burning of fossil fuels – is prominent in recent IPCC and UN Climate reports. The loss of low-lying island nations cannot be averted by CO2 mitigation alone. To say it is “possible” to cool the planet is a gross understatement. Specialized aircraft could deploy a sunshade of reflective particles into the upper atmosphere to backscatter a tiny fraction of incoming sunlight in a few years, for the price of a Hollywood blockbuster. What solar climate engineering is and is not is the focus of this science-based discussion.
